Stories Behind the Songs // Mama Said

Alexander went to sleep with gum in his mouth, and he woke up with gum in his hair. His ice cream fell off his ice cream cone and onto the ground. His brother found toys in their cereal boxes this morning, but he didn't. He tells his mom that he wants to move to Australia to escape his bad day.

His mom only replies, "Some days are like that, even in Australia." - Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day

my mom says that to me, too. she never disregards my bad days. she embraces her own bad days, like giving a hug, and owns them with bravery. she doesn't let her bad days rule over her, but she understands that the weight of them is something that shouldn't be pushed aside, ignored, avoided, or shoved down. it's both a blessing and a curse to feel things so deeply.

"Mama Said" is just that - a sweet song reminder to me that when a bad day is upon us, we can feel it wholeheartedly. God gave us emotions for a reason. there are reasons why we feel feelings. some days it's just enough to breathe in and breathe out. nothing else. and that's okay.

new morning's weight stays

and it's all i can do

to just breathe in, breathe out

oh mama said there would be those days
